Diptych Zine

zine2-0

Second zine! Hot off the cutting board! Diptych (Issue #1) will be a series of zines that showcase works in my sketchbook all fused together in a pretty package. This accordion zine measures approximately 3×2¼ inches and lays flat to just under 16 inches. Currently I have 15 finished and aiming to have 60 by the time Canzine rolls around.

This first issue features colored artwork on one side and meticulous black and white line drawings on the other.

Behind the Scenes

First things first; the layout. I scanned in several pages from my hand*book sketchbook and laid out the artwork in Adobe Photoshop, tweaking the colors here and there to fit with the scheme of the zine. I arranged one file for the inner pages and a separate file for the front cover.

I took these layouts to the printer and fired off a few double-sided large format prints: the inner pages on tinted stock and the cover on regular white paper to add some contrast. (Don’t you just love the feel of paper hot off the press?)

I cut out each strip, marked, scored and folded each page, alternating back and forth to follow an accordion format.

Now it was time to assemble the cover. After cutting each to size, I used spray adhesive to glue the cover to the rest of the zine.

Zine now completed, I decided to use a band of postal paper to hold it together and created individual tags to label and number each zine (this took ages as I had to cut, knot and hand write on sixty of these!)

This is the result to all my labour and love; everything bound in a tight, neat package and ready to be passed on to the next person.

With each set of four zines laid out, there’s a modest gap of blank space left at the top. As someone who hates wasting paper,  I squeezed in a mini version of the zine. They’re itty bitty and measure only 1¾x1¼ inches.
