I haven’t shared any of my graphic design in a while! I just recently finished up an Editorial & Publication class and the entire semester was dedicated to one project: a travel guide. I chose Amsterdam to be my city, I’ve been there once but stayed there for a pitifully short time …

I’ve been focusing my time entirely on illustration and zines, that I really miss designing layouts and interactive media. This project was a nice challenge to my rusty GD skills since it wasn’t a project I’d typically work on, aesthetically speaking. I like tiny delicate sans-serif fonts, lots of white space and rigid structures. This book called for cramming information and using predetermined typefaces … what is this Sabon LT Std you speak of? Trade Gothic? And how the hell do I use a grid?

After a few months, this is what I came up with. These are a few selected pages out of the lot: thank you to every photographer generous enough to lend their images!

This design focused on the easy and universal readability of icons and color codes. Each chapter has its own designated color and set of icons to express their information.

Another part of the project was to conceptualize an iPhone App to go along with the travel guide. Anything interactive like Apps and web design, I love working on. The idea of having to come up with something that is easy flowing and intuitive has always been a fun challenge.

I’m not sure what to do with my tidbits of graphic design projects. My long forgotten design portfolio needs a major overhaul.

On a final note: I FINALLY LEARNED HOW TO USE INDESIGN! Huzzah! Hip hip hooray! I put off learning this program for summers and thank all the graphic designers I bugged for tips and tricks.

A few icon assignments done throughout this semester: I think icons are really fun. They’re super small, super precise and super simple.

Therapist Couches

Mock icons for an article breaking down the 10 worst therapists you could ever encounter. I chose to personify the therapists as the couches they are synonymous with.

The Quick Fixer

Always on the go, pre-occupied on time and patches your problems with a band-aid solution

The Fuzzy Comforter

Unconditionally eager to listen to your problems with warmth and sympathy.

The Drug Pusher

Pills, pills, pills. Pills are the solution to life’s problems.

Rejected icon variation

Amanda

A commissioned portrait icon for model Amanda to use on her business card.

Exercise on the Subway

Mock Op-Ed spot for an article about exercising on the subway. Slimmer hips go that way.
