New York, New Yawk

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Back in Toronto! Last week was a ghetto-fab-hostel-crashing-3-day trip with Shianne and Myra. First day: Soho shopping trip, since we’re girly like that. Not too interesting since I’m not a shopaholic so I left with a couple shirts, boyfriend tees and a pair of keds.

The second day was Williamsburg. We took the pretty dank subway system (though Toronto’s not all that better) to explore what was apparently a ghost town at 11:00 in the morning. We shot a few photos of some really cool street art. I actually don’t own a good camera, so I took cellphone pics and with the wonders of photoshop give you this montage:

The sun was a beast that day. We took refuge in a neat little vegan cafe to grab some lunch. I’m not vegan nor vegetarian myself, so I prefer a nice meaty burger, but the food wasn’t half-bad for grains and green stuff.

Come nightfall, me and Shianne visited a comic shop near by: Midtown Comics. I nabbed a gorgeous art book and an indie comic.

Fast forward to the third and final day. This was probably my favorite day because we went gallery hopping in Chelsea. We skipped the MoMA alltogether, but rest assured I’ll be paying a visit next time I’m in town.

While at Amy Sillman’s exhibit at the Jenkins Gallery, me and my sister picked up her zine “The O-G” (volume 3). Interesting read about the lightbulb. Also nabbed a couple stickers that were on the walls of a building or two. Shuuuuush.

The journey back home was an ass-aching 10-hour bus ride with only my ipod and DS to amuse me. Motion sickness prevented me from doing any reading lest  a colorful addition land on my page.

We were back home on Friday night around midnight. That gave me one fullnight’s sleep before heading to TCAF. How could I miss it?! Despite the exhausting trip I dragged myself to the Toronto’s Reference Library. Grabbed these bad boys (and some long-awaited sushi afterwards):

I went to school on Sunday to clear out my locker of the piles of newsprint and illustration board and some old artwork to bring back home. I came just in time to catch the last half hour of the OCAD grad show. No time to take pics! I could only breeze through the illustration thesis projects and grabbed business cards of artists I could check out in-depth later on.

That is all.

Find Me!

For those of you active in these communities, find me floating around these lovely places:

More Hair!

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

I got it! The Hair ‘em Scare ‘em book I’ve been wanting is now sitting comfortably in my bookshelf of kick-ass art books. A couple friends told me that it was on sale at Urban Outfitters of all places so I booked it to Yonge street after class to grab the last copy. Lucky me!

I also picked up a couple vinyl toys to add to my modest collection: Where the Wild Things Are (Max), and Mongers (Drake).

My favorite toy to date is my Labbit which my sister got for me for Christmas 2 years ago? Ain’t it adorable? I’m heading to New York the first week of May so you know I’m going to be hitting up kidrobot!

Somewhat unrelated but still super cool is this vintage bag my sister got for me while on one of her downtown walks. Thanks Big Sis!

When I Grow Up …

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

When I was in grade school I wanted to be a pediatrician. After a few more years, I realized that I hated kids, so I scratched that and decided on pharmacist. High school came and went and by the last year I chucked out pharmacist and narrowed it down to microbiologist.

You see, I am a science nerd. Biology, chemistry, physics, I took them all.

I was originally going to apply to the University of Toronto in their Life Science program but after a year of constant, painstaking studying and horror stories I heard about the first year U of T program, I decided it was a no-go for me. Maybe I could just draw the cells instead? Illustrate science textbooks for high school kids? Do something like this?:

OCAD_cell(white blood cell landscape and illustrated process of phagocytosis done for last semester’s Anatomy class)

If one of my high school friends hadn’t mentioned OCAD, I probably would’ve been a full fledged hermitting nerd by now (not saying I’m still not). I love the fast-pace, dizzying lifestyle of the contemporary illustration scene despite the pretentious hipsters. But, if I wasn’t studying what I was studying I think I’d still want to go into biology.

Or be a person organizer.

Have you seen my room? Damn.
