Canzine-Superphantastic

It’s the day after Canzine and I am still basking in all the goodness I had the pleasure to be a part of. I’m exhausted and just a little woozy but that’s okay. Thank you all for coming by and stopping at my table! It was nice to see all the new and old faces.

Here are a few shots of my table thanks to Ness! Again, my superb artist friend with a camera.

Some shots taken by my sis Myra, who was sitting beside me!

Zines are practically currency at an event like this, so I went to trade zines with all my friends and bought everything else that caught my eye. Another stack of delicious creativity on paper to add to my stash.

Speaking of Ness, here are her zines! It’s her first year and she totally rocked it with these babies.

Canzine-Ness

Archie (also known as Daniel but we prefer to call him that), had these cool prints and a mini zine.

Canzine-Daniel

Nancy had these really nice abstract drawings in prints and zine.

Canzine-Nancy

Nimit with his gorgeous (GORGEOUS!) works and Myra’s new merch, great as always. I always tease her for being so deep and emotional when I just like pretty things.

Marta‘s screen printed sugar skull and Tessar‘s lino-print of Two Large Forms. Unbelievable.

Peter‘s zine and lino-cut print I was eyeing since I saw it on his blog and Hyein‘s wonderful comics! And her fan, who kept this Phan cool (har har).

Canzine-PeterHyein

Hieng‘s t-shirt which I was dying to get since forever and a little notebook!

Justine and Selena‘s (no relation) new zine that I eagerly swapped for!

Wowee Zonk issue #3, Island Fold art book, and beautiful pins by Nimit, Hyein, Eunice Luk, and awesome bitty toys by Dennis!

I … think that’s it. I know I missed a few zines I picked up but you are cherished nonetheless. Thanks again for stopping by! See you all next year!

Roleplay in Vancouver!

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

My sister went to Vancouver last year and dropped off a few of our zines at the zine library in The Regional Assembly of Text store on Main street.

She went again this year and sent me this snapshot a few days ago:

vancouver-zineMine’s still there! Hooray!

Happy to see it’s still there and not lost or stolen (apparently 3 of my sister’s zines were taken!). I’ll be mailing more zines to libraries (hopefully) around the world by New Years. I’ll stock up on stamps now…

Bansky in Toronto

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Yesterday I met up with a few friends to catch up . The boiling sweat-inducing weather called for migration to an air-conditioned building and what better place than the AMC theatre to catch the new Bansky movie Exit Through the Gift Shop.

For a documentary that wasn’t on Bansky himself, I thought it was really entertaining and just as intriguing as the man of mystery. What was so cool about today that made it utterly complete was that while walking along Spadina ave. noneother than Ness spotted a “BANKSY!!” I recognized the area as the entrance near a sketchy playground I used to visit at night with my high school buddies. Although this can’t override the good times, it definitely enhances the concrete I’ve seen a few people stumble by.

Rumour has it that Bansky left a few of his pieces scattered around Toronto and some were already being covered up (had the proprietors not known what they had done?!).

Of course none of us had our cameras with us so we fumbled to grab our phones to snap a quick pic. This is what we saw:

A few other of his work in Toronto.

I think this calls for a hunt for the remaining pieces. I’ll bring the search party, you bring your eagle eyes.

drip_artgraphite and colored pencil on canson paper

It’s a pretty dreary day today. My nose feels kind of drippy, and I haven’t done much but stare past the blinds by my window. I think I may take a walk.

New York, New Yawk

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Back in Toronto! Last week was a ghetto-fab-hostel-crashing-3-day trip with Shianne and Myra. First day: Soho shopping trip, since we’re girly like that. Not too interesting since I’m not a shopaholic so I left with a couple shirts, boyfriend tees and a pair of keds.

The second day was Williamsburg. We took the pretty dank subway system (though Toronto’s not all that better) to explore what was apparently a ghost town at 11:00 in the morning. We shot a few photos of some really cool street art. I actually don’t own a good camera, so I took cellphone pics and with the wonders of photoshop give you this montage:

The sun was a beast that day. We took refuge in a neat little vegan cafe to grab some lunch. I’m not vegan nor vegetarian myself, so I prefer a nice meaty burger, but the food wasn’t half-bad for grains and green stuff.

Come nightfall, me and Shianne visited a comic shop near by: Midtown Comics. I nabbed a gorgeous art book and an indie comic.

Fast forward to the third and final day. This was probably my favorite day because we went gallery hopping in Chelsea. We skipped the MoMA alltogether, but rest assured I’ll be paying a visit next time I’m in town.

While at Amy Sillman’s exhibit at the Jenkins Gallery, me and my sister picked up her zine “The O-G” (volume 3). Interesting read about the lightbulb. Also nabbed a couple stickers that were on the walls of a building or two. Shuuuuush.

The journey back home was an ass-aching 10-hour bus ride with only my ipod and DS to amuse me. Motion sickness prevented me from doing any reading lest  a colorful addition land on my page.

We were back home on Friday night around midnight. That gave me one fullnight’s sleep before heading to TCAF. How could I miss it?! Despite the exhausting trip I dragged myself to the Toronto’s Reference Library. Grabbed these bad boys (and some long-awaited sushi afterwards):

I went to school on Sunday to clear out my locker of the piles of newsprint and illustration board and some old artwork to bring back home. I came just in time to catch the last half hour of the OCAD grad show. No time to take pics! I could only breeze through the illustration thesis projects and grabbed business cards of artists I could check out in-depth later on.

That is all.
