Fetishes are wild and wacky things. I originally started exploring this dark corner of the bedroom with my Roleplay Zine. This time though, I decided to take it to the next level; instead of a cute, plump character, the protagonist was transformed to a more humanized, relatable young woman.

“Get Off!” (Roleplay Zine #2) is a further exploration of the absurdity of roleplaying. How having multiple identities have found their way into our sex lives. How sexual attraction is limitless: trees, diapers, animals, food, and even unsightly hair. Essentially anything that’ll raise the eyebrows of the average Joe (unless Joe’s into some kinky stuff himself).

I know when I started the project that I wanted to create something that was intimate and interactive. Something discreet and voyeuristic you could hide underneath your mattress, or wedge between an unassuming shelf of books. Essentially a play-off of the porno mag but with less vulgar and upping the class.

A visit the Paper Place, the printers, grabbed some needle and thread and …Tada! All the pieces assembled in a handmade book. The jacket is unmarked (which I may change later on) with the illustrated cover on the inside. Currently it’s a short erotic art book including all 5 pieces.

Now here’s the fun part. You can actually undress the models. Let me demonstrate:

I wanted to make the costumes detachable to showcase the character as a stand alone, ordinary girl sans charade. Now how about the rest in their naked glory? You’re going to have to get your hands on a book to enjoy a piece of that.

I’ll be making more of these for Canzine 2010. If you’re interested in a copy, please contact me either by email or comment! I’m at the early stages of production so having an estimate number of copies to make would be great. I haven’t decided yet if I’ll add more pages/zany fetishes, but I’ll be sure to update a decision some time this summer.

What I can tell you is that there’ll be a limited run of hardcover editions (all handmade of course) with a potential softcover alternative.

Happy staring.

P.S. This was done as part of a super fun last project for Gary Taxali’s illustration class. Here’s a shout out for the support. It made my semester!

I wish I could’ve updated sooner with my experience with my first year participating in Canzine but things kept on popping up and this update was pushed back until .. almost a month after the event. So I’ll just keep this short and sweet!

Here are a few shots of my table (thanks to Myra, since I forgot to bring my camera that day).

The Gladstone hotel was absolutely packed. There was a constant trail of people shuffling should-to-shoulder across our tables. I met tons of amazing artists and fellow zinesters including Tessar Lo who I met at Fanexpo a while back.

Here are a couple people who picked up my zines:

moechelle

Petra Cee

Also a huge thanks to Toronto Craft Alert who dropped by my table and added my site and blog to their website!

Finally if you missed me at Canzine and wanted to get your hands on one of my zines (or other snazzy merch), I opened a shop on my main website! Quantities are limited!

Second zine! Hot off the cutting board! Diptych (Issue #1) will be a series of zines that showcase works in my sketchbook all fused together in a pretty package. This accordion zine measures approximately 3×2¼ inches and lays flat to just under 16 inches. Currently I have 15 finished and aiming to have 60 by the time Canzine rolls around.

This first issue features colored artwork on one side and meticulous black and white line drawings on the other.

Behind the Scenes

First things first; the layout. I scanned in several pages from my hand*book sketchbook and laid out the artwork in Adobe Photoshop, tweaking the colors here and there to fit with the scheme of the zine. I arranged one file for the inner pages and a separate file for the front cover.

I took these layouts to the printer and fired off a few double-sided large format prints: the inner pages on tinted stock and the cover on regular white paper to add some contrast. (Don’t you just love the feel of paper hot off the press?)

I cut out each strip, marked, scored and folded each page, alternating back and forth to follow an accordion format.

Now it was time to assemble the cover. After cutting each to size, I used spray adhesive to glue the cover to the rest of the zine.

Zine now completed, I decided to use a band of postal paper to hold it together and created individual tags to label and number each zine (this took ages as I had to cut, knot and hand write on sixty of these!)

This is the result to all my labour and love; everything bound in a tight, neat package and ready to be passed on to the next person.

With each set of four zines laid out, there’s a modest gap of blank space left at the top. As someone who hates wasting paper, I squeezed in a mini version of the zine. They’re itty bitty and measure only 1¾x1¼ inches.
