Typography illustration for the Pascuense, Easter Island word Tingo which means to gradually borrow all objects of one’s desire from a friend’s house.

I love contour drawings of everyday objects so I had loads of fun rendering every little knick-knack. There are ordinary things and also some more comical ones. A toilet, turtle, pimp hat, cactus and a Starcraft II sentry just to pay homage to my geekier side.

Behind the Scenes

Linework was drawn with a 0.05 Staedtler pigment liner on bristol paper. It took me a while to come up with the objects to draw! Household objects …. appliances … tea cups, lots of tea cups …

“Award Accelerator – grow your miles even faster.”
“Flatten your Expectations – 180 degree flat bed business seats.”

This was my approach to a mock assignment for United Airway’s AD posters. Each illustration was to convey new features for the airline (chosen ones listed up, respectively). I wanted my illustrations to convey airy, fun experiences and steer away from literal approaches to the concepts.

Close-Ups

Behind the Scenes

First up is the concept sketches. I had two for each concept that were narrowed down to the best two.

Colored revised sketches: the man on the right didn’t look quite planted enough so I tilted him to a varying degree to get him to look like he was actually laying down. I imported these into Photoshop and plop in some potential color palettes.

Inking is the most tedious part. I usually print off my revised rough true to size and transfer it onto paper with graphite paper. This particular inking was done with Copic Multiliner in 0.3 and 0.1.

For a bigger project, I scan the drawing in sections and piece them together digitally. Everything is imported into Photoshop and colored using the pen and brush tool with various layer masks on top.

Add any crop marks, do some color tweaks and that’s it!

Fetishes are wild and wacky things. I originally started exploring this dark corner of the bedroom with my Roleplay Zine. This time though, I decided to take it to the next level; instead of a cute, plump character, the protagonist was transformed to a more humanized, relatable young woman.

“Get Off!” (Roleplay Zine #2) is a further exploration of the absurdity of roleplaying. How having multiple identities have found their way into our sex lives. How sexual attraction is limitless: trees, diapers, animals, food, and even unsightly hair. Essentially anything that’ll raise the eyebrows of the average Joe (unless Joe’s into some kinky stuff himself).

I know when I started the project that I wanted to create something that was intimate and interactive. Something discreet and voyeuristic you could hide underneath your mattress, or wedge between an unassuming shelf of books. Essentially a play-off of the porno mag but with less vulgar and upping the class.

A visit the Paper Place, the printers, grabbed some needle and thread and …Tada! All the pieces assembled in a handmade book. The jacket is unmarked (which I may change later on) with the illustrated cover on the inside. Currently it’s a short erotic art book including all 5 pieces.

Now here’s the fun part. You can actually undress the models. Let me demonstrate:

I wanted to make the costumes detachable to showcase the character as a stand alone, ordinary girl sans charade. Now how about the rest in their naked glory? You’re going to have to get your hands on a book to enjoy a piece of that.

I’ll be making more of these for Canzine 2010. If you’re interested in a copy, please contact me either by email or comment! I’m at the early stages of production so having an estimate number of copies to make would be great. I haven’t decided yet if I’ll add more pages/zany fetishes, but I’ll be sure to update a decision some time this summer.

What I can tell you is that there’ll be a limited run of hardcover editions (all handmade of course) with a potential softcover alternative.

Happy staring.

P.S. This was done as part of a super fun last project for Gary Taxali’s illustration class. Here’s a shout out for the support. It made my semester!

Another Taxali assignment using three words in an imaginative and innovative way. Out of the outrageously long list, I chose Lucille, Swing, and Tree Frog (amongst others for my rough sketches).

Here were my initial sketches:

A digital color overlay:

The final:

Done in chalk pastel, colored pencil, pencil on acrylic gouache

I’ve always thought nose hairs were really weird stuff, so I ended up chosing nasal hygiene as my concept. I actually like the colors for the digital rough better, so I may have to do some tinkering around to readjust the colors.
